Jazmine Sullivan

JazmineJazmine, a Philadelphia native was raised and born in the city. Her mother Pam was a back-up singer with Philadelphia International Records. As a child her father was named to be City's Historic Strawberry Mansion curator. The family then moved into the building's historic structure. In 2005 she was a graduate of the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts as a vocal music major. Sullivan performed as a contralto singer for the children's choir and, just a couple of years later she joined the adult choir. Sullivan did not get introduced to secular music at the beginning. "When I reached eleven and a half, someone asked to enroll me on a gospel record. I was not going to make that decision," she says. "Then McDonald's offered a competition to kids from cities. Then I had the opportunity to perform Accept The Grace God Gives me on Showtime Apollo. My audience was very accommodating." She sang with Stevie Wonder at his grandson's birthday at the age of thirteen. Sullivan was signed initially to Jive Records at the age fifteen. It was her first time signing with Jive Records around the age of fifteen. She produced an entire album, but the album didn't get released. Sullivan was then dropped off the record label. She maintained a working relationship with Missy Elliott and produced some of the songs for her debut project, like the smash single "Backstabbers" composed by Timbaland and written by Elliott.
